Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India entrance Examination conducted jointly by IISc and seven other IITs, every year in the month of February/March. The GATE score/Rank is used for admissions to Post graduate Programmes (ME, M.Tech, MS, direct Ph.D) in IISc, IITs, NITs and other Universities in India, with financial assistance provided by MHRD. The GATE Score may also be used by PSUS for recruitment of candidates for prestigious jobs with attractive salary packages. Some of the PSUS which use GATE score for providing jobs include BARC, BHEL, IOCL, HPCL, NTPC, Power Grid, NHPC etc. GATE exam is mostly numerical base exam so here they primarily tests your problem solving ability with given bounded time with accuracy along with your basic concept in core subjects. The GATE score reflects the relative performance level in a particular branch.

Pattern of Question Paper

All the papers of GATE will be conducted by an ONLINE computer Based Test (CBT). The GATE paper consists of questions of both multiple choice type and numerical answer type. For numerical answer type questions, the candidates have to enter a number as the answer using a virtual key board. The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hour duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.

Criteria

Eligibility: Degree Completed or final year students of BE /B.Tech or its equivalent. MSc/MA/MCA can also apply.
Age Limit: There is no upper age Limit.
Number of attempt: No limits on number of attempt.
Syllabi: The syllabi for the exam in Engineering streams include General aptitude (Numerical & Verbal) for 15 marks, Engineering Mathematics and technical subjects studied at B.Tech level for 85 marks.
Validity: GATE score card is valid for two years.

Why GATE

  • GATE is mandatory for pursuing M.Tech, M.E., from any institute.
  • If you have a good rank in GATE, you can join IISc, IITs etc., where good campus placements are available with attractive salary packages. The salary packages range from Rs. 6.0 lakh to Rs. 30 lakh per annum for M.Techs depending upon the specialization and performance.
  • GATE provides another opportunity for those who failed earlier to crack IIT-JEE and still have a cherished dream of studying in IITs. By securing a good rank in GATE, you can join IITs for M.Tech/MS
  • Selection in PSU’s : Engineer Trainee / Management trainee Now day most of the Public sector units call for interviews of Engineer Trainee / Management trainee on the basis of GATE Score. List of top Public sector Units like ONGC, NTPC, ISRO, BHEL, BARC, DRDO, DVC, Power-grid, IOCL and many more Organization are going to recruit engineers only through Valid GATE score.
  • Some of the prestigious organizations like BARC call for interviews for scientist jobs, based on GATE score/percentiles. Those who get good GATE scores are generally selected.
  • A valid GATE score is essential for obtaining financial assistance during master's program & direct Doctoral Program in Engineering in various institutes supported by MHRD or other Government agencies
  • If a student secures good rank in GATE, he can try for admission in P.G Diploma in industrial. Engg in NITIE, Mumbai, one of the best institutes for management courses after IIMs. Here, the campus placements are excellent and very attractive salary packages are available.
  • In some of the universities in abroad (Singapore etc.), financial aid is offered for pursuing MS if a student possesses a good GATE rank. If a student desires to excel in research and development, it is advisable to join M.Tech / MS in IISc Bangalore or IITs and continue for Ph.D.
  • Some of the institute give junior research fellowship on the basis of GATE score.

Eligibility

The following are eligible to take GATE:
  • Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2/ Post-B.Sc./ Post-Diploma) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Candidates in the second or higher year of Four-year integrated Master’s degree programs (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/ Technology.
  • Candidates in the fourth or higher year of Five-year integrated Master’s degree programs or Dual Degree programs in Engineering/Technology.
